March

Time has been going by so fast!

Highlights from March:

Visit to Bududa- I took a friend from Jinja out to the village I lived in last year. We visited the Arlington Academy of Hope, the school I worked at last year. The students were busy in class, and it was great to see them! Then we went to Naomi's project-- I have blogged about her project with the students with special needs. The kids were looking great with their new uniforms. Then we visited the campsite for the survivors of the landslide. On our way back, we stopped in Mbale to visit Arlington students at secondary school.

Learning to cook -- as many of you already know, I am a horrible cook. And this is being said from back in the States with an oven, microwave, running water, and pre-packaged food. Now I am trying to cook from scratch. First, I have been practicing cooking pumpkin. It seems so easy- cut the pieces, place in the pot, add a little water, cover, and cook. I tried twice and the first time it came out stringy and mushy, and the second time I burned everything. Then the gas cooker was broken, so I cooked everything in the water boiler / percolator. The food that does work: eggs, macaroni, shells, beans. The food that does not work in the percolator: cabbage, cow peas, and pumpkin.

Kampala-- the big news in Kampala is the burning of the Kasubi Tombs. The Kasubi Tombs is the burial site for the Kings of the Buganda tribe-- the largest tribe in Uganda. About two weeks back someone set fire to these tombs and riots started in the days following. The blame has been passed around between many groups including the government.

Easter-- the plan for Easter was to go to the Ssesse Islands. Angelo and I with a group of friends boarded the three hour ferry on Saturday afternoon to spend the weekend on the islands. Uganda is a beautiful country, so we expected the same of the islands. It turns out, the islands do not live up to the mainland. And the place we were supposed to stay was awful and all other places around us were booked. So, we decided to go home the next day instead.

Past time-- I saw my first Uganda Cranes game in the Mandela stadium. The Cranes won 4-0! Andrew, the former bursar at Arlington led the cheering! Otherwise, we have been making as many trips to the beach as possible!

Happy Easter everyone!
